The Disciplines
Defenders
"A battle avoided is better than a battle won."

Defenders are those members of the Kin that are skilled in the offensive and defensive side of the Power.  Their duty, though, lies not in attacking people, but rather defending.  They are the people who defend the Kin in times where it is needed, and are often seen travelling with other members of the Kin to serve the same purpose.  They will not attack anyone unless the situation leaves no other alternative, though they will seek to detain anyone who seems a threat, and will always attack Shadowspawn unless the situation makes it unwise.  Also, the Defenders see to any prisoners that the Kin may take. Protectors who become Defenders are usually very military-minded individuals, proficient in many more weapons than other Protectors and a head for tactics and troop movement. They also tend to be well-versed in how to best utilize the One Power the Kin have access to in battles and wars.

Historians
"Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are bound by the Wheel to repeat them."

Historians are the researchers and the teachers of the Kin.  They are facinated by events of the past, their causes, effects, and impact upon the world of today.  There are many lessons and secrets to be learned, if only one has the dedication to set their foot upon the course.  Somewhere the answers wait, and these men and women have dedicated themselves to that task.  More than that however, knowledge not shared is again lost and so they share their findings with those they feel are worthy. Remember, the Truth is out there.

Restorers
"The first step is the hardest, and the first step in the Wheel's cycle is life."

Life is the most important thing to Restorers.  The life of the land, cultures, animals, and of course, peoples.  They spend their time doing many of the things a village Wisdom might, healing the sick, tending to blights in the crops, being a councillor to bickering spouses and helping animals in  labor or who are otherwise ill.  Things they consider 'Unnatural' are reviled, and destroyed like the cancer they see them as.  Such things as Trollocs, Fades, the Blight and other Shadowspawn.  If there is anyone who would cry mercy for the life of a Darkfriend, they might be found here (but that doesn't mean they will), instead pleading the case of servitude or some other form of punnishment. Protectors who follow this Discipline are particularly loathe to harm others, and do so only in direct protection of themselves or their Charges. Even so, they tend to favor weapons that won't kill a man outright and weild staves, maces, and whips.

Crusaders
"Bad things happen when good people do nothing."

Crusaders are in many ways the most obviously active of the Disciplines.  They are the political manipulators, and information gatherers of the Kin.  While they may often place themselves in positions as advisors, their true affiliation is kept secret.  Through this method they seek to further the goals of the Kin and ensure justice is served.  They police themselves, making sure that justice does not become revenge, and that the good of all is truly the purpose of their members.

Artificers/Craftsmen
"XXXXXXX"

Dedicated to unlocking the secret behind making and using Angreal, Ter'Angreal, and Sa'Angreal, this is in many ways the most dangerous of the Disciplines.  Too often Ter'Angreal can kill someone for accidentally laying a hand upon it or channeling in its' presence.  In addition, the Artificers dedicate themselves to the intricicies of the One Power, studying Lost Talents, and how the Power can be used in building, daily living, etc.  They often do little else than study how to use Saidar, but none of the other disciplines can match their knowledge and the intricicies of their Weaves. Protectors who follow this Dicipline are often artists and craftsmen, be they blacksmiths, painters, or  carpenters. They often fufill the mundane end of  the creations this Dicipline produces, the women handling the Weaves.

Harmonizers
"XXXXXXXX"
These are the mediators and peacekeepers of the Kin.  More than making sure that justice is exacted at any cost, the Harmonizers seek a solution that is equitable or at least fair, to all.  They dislike strife of any sort, be it a marital problem or a dispute over property lines.  They study to be impartial and to not miss the forest for the trees as often times the problem at hand is not the true root of the conflict.
Philosophers
"Perception is Reality"

This discipline studies thought, dreams, and the very nature of Reality.  Where some people simply accept that a thing is, the Philosophers wonder -why- a thing is.  They spend their time thinking on esoteric subjects, and making the quantum leap that is something beyond logic and study to unravel the secrets of the Universe. The theory of reincarnation and how and why the Wheel weaves is of particular interest to them.

The Titles
Serenla
Literally 'Stuborn Daughter', this guild level is reserved for punnishment. This is not often a title bestowed upon those of the Kin since they have such a loose set of rules. As well, it is often left to the members themselves to atone for any wrongdoings  they have taken. To be called Serenla by the Guild is a sign that such a woman is very close to being asked to leave the Kin..
Caballien
The term 'Freeman' is granted to those who have decided to become Protector to one of the women of the Kin,, but have not yet had such loyalty proven, or have not demonstrated their ability to have body follow heart and defend theose they have sworn to.
Niende Ko'di
The Lost Ones, most often women who have left the Tower for one reason or another, wether it be that they simply did not wish to become Aes Sedai, or they did not make the cut to what the Sedai felt was needed to be one of their members. Occasionally there are those that come to the Kin because they have no desire to serve any time within the Shining Walls, but realize a need to train their abilities so they are not a threat to thiemselves or others. This is the title they hold untill they have decided if they wish to dedicate more time to the Guild and contribute, or simply attain their training and return to a more sedate lifestyle. Even should such be their choice of a future, the Kin do not turn them away, but ask that they keep in touch so they might extend help should the need arise.
Aethan
As a Shield, a Protector has proven their willingness and ability to protect their Charge and is accorded the respect due him and the trust that they know their duty. Those who have duties elsewhere or are content to simply serve their Charge retain this title. Only those who have a desire to be more involved with the Kin and their altruistic goals seek to join a Discipline and become Valon.
Shaiel
These women have found their purpose, and have decided to follow the Kin and further their understanding of the One Power. At this stage of their learning they usually learn all of the indicental uses of the One Power, such as heating ones' Tea that requires a delicate touch and weaving many Spheres together. The Kin also encourage traveling to gain a bit of world-knowledge to go with their knowledge of the One Power. As in many cases with the Kin, keeping a broad persepctive is imperitve to who and what they are and what they hope to accomplish. All of the Kin's Disciplines are also studied at this stage so they might learn the viewpoints the Kin take on the world and decide which path they would like to follow to help out their fellow man.
Valon
A Protector who is called Valon, or "Guard", has decided to follow a Discipline with the women of the Kin and contribute his time and energy into the Kins' overall purpose and not just the protection of their Charge. They wear the belt that designates their affiliation with a particular Discipline and attend any gatherings they have, adding their own views and opinions to the mix. Their voices are heard as much as anyone elses, their lack of the ability to channel  is never held against them because the Discipline is an outlook of the mind, not of the abilites of the body. A Valon is not required to choose the same Discipline as his Charge.
Taen (Discipline)
Taen are the "Raised Up", those women who have settled on a Discipline and have learned their basic Weaves and their uses. This does not mean they have learned every Weave, but they do have a flexible and expansive repetoire at their fingertips. At this level, they actively work to forward the ideals and principals of their Discipline and go out to help others who are lost find their way to the Kin, who will help them. While a few Niende Ko'di and some Shaiel  have returned to their homelands to work, keeping only light contact with the Kin, the Taen are very active within the Guild, stopping into the Manor on many occasions to give reports of anything in their travels and consult others of their Discipline.
Der'Valon
Master Guards, these Protectors not only protect their Charges, are active in the bussiness of their Disciplines, but train those who are in need of it amoung the Protectors in the ways of battle, and of the Kin. They are profisicent in a number of weapons and you can usually find a WeaponMaster or two in their ranks.
Der'Taer (Discipline)
These Master Raised, or more commonly called Teachers, lead their respective Disciplines, as well as taking care as to see the Niende Ko'di and Shaiel taught to their satisfaction. They take a great deal of responsibility upon themselves, and are granted much respect by the Guild because of their sacrifice for them. They are often unable to travel freely, so much of their time given over to the furtherance of the Guild.
Haran'ta
Affectionately called 'The Knitting Circle'' because of the way they conduct their meetings, these four women spend their time gathering information from the Disciplines and any other sources they might have and discussing the world around them. They are the ones who make the decisions on what, if anything the Guild should do in respsonse to events that come up, and where to ask the Disciplines to send representatives. When the four gather to discuss the events of the week, they sit in a circle with one chair at each of the cardinal points of the compass, rotating clockwise each time they meet. The northernmost chair is the place of Tradition and is associated with the Sphere of Earth. No matter which Discipline the Haran'ta follows, when they discuss a topic, the one who sits in the North chair will always make her points citing solidity and tradition. She who sits in the eastern chair, the chair of Air, argues Logic in the debate. South, or Fire, is also the chair of change, expressing radical ideas and deviations from the norm. West is the seat of Water and emotion,. One can never debate doing anything without remembering the element of human emotion.
Der'valon tia Jeade'en
The Master Guard to the True Finder, this Protector is given the responsibility of making sure all of the Protectors are trained, or being trained to his satisfaction. While Protectors follow their Charge, the Der'valon  tia Jeade'en is house-bound so to speak, just as is his Charge, the Jeade'en. Hence, he is the lucky winner of the responsibilites of keeping the Motherhouse safe and the Protectors trained and ready. he is the penultamate authority of all security matters when it comes to the Guild, and those who ignore his words quickly learn the error of their ways.
Jeade'en
The True Finder, this woman is the soul of the Kin, taking the seat of Spirit and the gatherings of the Haran'ta. To the surprise of many, this is on the floor in the center of the four. While they knit and talk of  the bussiness at hand, the Jeade'en often rolls the yarn into balls or untangles it so that they might make something of it. As the seat of Spirit, she argues the ethics and morality of a deed. When the Haran'ta are deadlocked ona course of action, it falls to her to cast the deciding vote. While the Jeade'en is considered the leader of the Kin, and carries out the Will of the Kin, it is the Knitting Circle who makes decision after careful deliberation, only calling upon the Jeade'en to vote in the case of a tie. She is entrusted to make decision for them when meeting with important personages, however, and to speak for the good of them all should the need arise and there is not time to gather the Haran'ta.

Now many of the concepts about the Kin on The Creator's Shadow are entirely new and original and so I'm sure there are many questions. I will try to fill out as much as I can about the Guilds' purpose and background, so if you have questions, please feel free to Email me so I can add it to the page. :)

Many, many thanks to PeeLee and her beautiful graphics and willingness to share :)
